Jujube chasing her tail
From time to time, Jujube chases her tail. Sometimes she does it in conjunction to her Shiba 500 or when she's playing with Loki. Loki doesn't chase his tail. Such idiocy is beneath him.

Some good playtime
Sunday morning 7:30am, I was a nervous wreck. We had crated the two dogs for the night. Since our last scuffle, we had continually kept them separated. I didn't know what to do. Do I open up Juju's crate first? Loki's crate first? Etc.
I had to wake up my husband for support. I knew that I couldn't keep them separated forever. And in fact, I think keeping them separated was doing more harm than good. It was building up more frustrated energy.
With his help, we decided to hand feed both of them. One kibble for Juju. One kibble for Loki, as long as he was good and didn't display signs of aggression. I think we'll continue hand feeding both for awhile. (Yesterday's breakfast didn't go over so well. Juju ate Loki's food. He got pissed about that one. They didn't fight at that point, but we think it created the animosity for other scuffles.)
After breakfast, I watched them both very carefully and stopped Loki as soon as he displayed signs of aggression, such as fixating on her, growling, barking, or lifting his lips. I was very careful to make sure they had their own personal space and didn't let them get close to each other. I had to stop Loki a couple times and put him in a relax position. Things weren't exactly all better at this point, but at least I felt like I had the situation under control. I started to gain confidence in my ability to handle them.
Then I took the two of them out for a walk around our neighborhood. They seem to have no issues with walking together outdoors. Loki had no problems with her encroaching on his personal space, and Juju typically walked in front of Loki.
Around 11am, the two of them decided to be friendly and play with each other in the bedroom. Yay! I was SO glad. So relieved to see them be nice and play. They chased each other around like crazy, knocking over the plastic water bowl, jumping on and off the bed.
Here are a couple snapshots of them playing in the bedroom.

Here you can see Loki's injury above his eye from the first scuffle. Poor Loki. He was the bully and instigator, but apparently, he was also the one who got hurt.

The rest of the day went very well. They played more together in the backyard. Running around like crazy, chasing each other. Then they played some more in the basement. Running in circles and even some wrestling. Loki tried to hump Juju, but she's very good at using her butt to shake him off. She wouldn't let him get on top of her at all.
Here they are tonight, peacefully sharing the couch. Maybe I'm asking for trouble by not demanding that they both get off, but they seem to be doing so well. Maybe it's better to just enjoy the peace. Loki's learning to share.

Shiba Meet Up
We went for our very first Shiba Inu Meet up this afternoon at Shirlington Dog Park. The forecast said rain, but we decided to head out anyways. We had a bit of trouble finding parking. It was our first time to that park. It's a bit of an odd park; it's all along a river bank. We're not used to that in California.
We met three other Shibas there in the small dog region. Not as many as I hoped, but it was raining a little bit today.

Loki made it all down the rocks himself. Very cautious the first time. But after that, he was bouncing up and down real fast.

The shiba with the red harness, named Noble, was the most dominant one among the bunch. He was still entact & was a very in-your-face dog. Loki & Noble made good friends, and enjoyed a good game of chase.

As for the dog park itself, I'm not sure that I'm a fan. Parking is difficult. And while there are plenty of poop bags, there aren't enough trash cans to dispose of the poop. The trash cans are only by the entrances. I'm sure that the dogs love the river, but I'm not sure I want a wet or dirty dog in my car. The best thing about this dog park is that it's pretty large.
We'll have to try out some other dog parks in the area.

Who's that? A dog more standoff-ish than Loki.

Water vs. Ball... what will win?

Loki and the frog
The nice thing about Virginia, and the east coast in general, is the abundance of woods. There are a lot of woods. Loki seems to love the woods. We went to a park yesterday. There, he met his very first frog (or is it a toad?). In the beginning the frog played dead, and Loki eventually lost interest. Then it hopped over to some other part, and Loki had a little trouble finding it again. He couldn't really see the frog, which was camouflaged pretty well, but he could sniff it out. Funny how different our senses are. We humans could spot the frog even with the camouflage, but Loki couldn't.
Here we have a clip of Loki bouncing after the frog!

Rollerblading
I wasn't sure how Loki would react to rollerblades. I was afraid it would freak him out & he would start barking at them. But luckily, he didn't. The blades didn't seem to phase him one bit.
Despite the misleading picture, he didn't really pull me too much. Mostly, he hung around on my side. He had lots of fun and seriously surprised me by how well-behaved he was. Great exercise for him without making me exert too much energy. I highly recommend it.
Ventura
On Saturday my family and I went for lunch in Ventura, CA. Since Loki was with us, we needed to find a restaurant with outdoor dining and allowed dogs. We went to Tutti's Off Main. I've been there before for dinner and their food is excellent. This time I was very surprised that the server even brought Loki water. I've never encountered such pet friendly service at a restaurant before. How cute is that water bowl!

After lunch we took a stroll on the beach. Loki was very excited. He loves running towards and away from the ocean water as it drifts in and out.
Yesterday, we went hiking in Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura.

Lazy dog. Lying down in the middle of the hike.

We couldn't find a doggie water fountain & I forgot to bring a bowl. So I put him up on a human water fountain. So cute!

Shiba 500 on a leash
I apologize to my blog readers for the lack of recent posts. I was super busy in the past two weeks, but now I'm happy to report that I've filed my dissertation and am finally graduating!!
So what has Loki been up to? He's been attempting to do his Shiba 500 while leashed on our walks. I don't get it. Doesn't it hurt? He ends up hitting the end of the leash, jerking his head the other way. But he still keeps on going and going. Sometimes I don't know what to do with him. Do I let him run? Do I stop him immediately? If I let him run, he just keeps hitting the end of his leash over and over and over again. If I try to stop him, I need to shorten his leash all the way to his collar, before he will stop. Even with 6" of slack, he'll keep trying to run. If we're close to home, I try to head home and then he can do his run inside our apartment. What a silly dog.

Where's the bottom?
Tonight, I gave Loki his dinner in the Tug-a-Jug toy. I was watching TV & not really paying attention to him. Then I look over, and to my absolute amazement, I see that Loki got the bottom off. Wow! Seriously? How did he get that bottom off?

Loki jumping
Hm... maybe Loki would be good at agility. Or at the very least, I think he'd have lots of fun with it. We did not encourage him to jump when he was younger, since jumping is bad for growing puppy joints. But now he is over a year old. Here we have a video of him clearing a major obstacle (me) with no problems!

Update on the New Toy
Thank you to the anonymous commenter who suggested more kibble. I filled it to about a 1/3 full yesterday, and Loki had a much easier time getting it out. It's now enough of a challenge that it keeps him occupied. And from time to time, he can actually get some food out, so he isn't discouraged. Yay!
Oh... I just checked up on the toy and the kibble is almost all gone. Hm... not sure why I bothered being worried that he would be discouraged. Silly me.
I bought it at Target, sort of as an impulse buy. It was an impulse buy because I wasn't planning on buying it. But it wasn't, because I've had my eye on that toy for awhile now. You can find it on Amazon.com and other various websites and pet stores.
It's so cute to watch him play with it. Who needs TV when you can be entertained by a Shiba?

A new toy
Loki got a new toy today! Wow-whee! It's a treat dispensing toy called "Tug a Jug." We used to put some kibble in a water bottle and give that for Loki to play with. The problem with that was he would chew on the plastic; that's not very safe. This toy seems fairly indestructible and sturdy. However, it seems like it's much more difficult for Loki. He's been at it on and off all day and I'm not sure whether he ever got anything out. I hope he doesn't get discouraged.
