- Taking Loki to the vet to get his nails trimmed has been working out very well for us. This has seemed to help some of his behavior issues. He's much more comfortable with us playing with his feet. The only downside is that it's an additional expense of $18 a visit. Not terribly expensive, but more expensive than a groomer. And we don't think that the vet does a great job of really getting those nails down as far as possible. Maybe they don't want to risk cutting it too close, or maybe they just want us to come back more frequently.
- Jujube's allergies seemed to get better for awhile after we switched her to fish. But then recently, we noticed that she started scratching up a storm. Yun thinks this is because she ate turkey. Does being allergic to chicken mean you're also allergic to turkey? I don't know, but it seems plausible.
- Other than the scratching, Jujube's been perfectly fine. No problematic turkey bones in her system. No infection from the cut from the fight.
- Complete potty training has resumed. We've been back to normal for a few weeks now. No more accidents. Yay!

Great list of accomplishments! Have a wonderful holiday!
I'm so happy that I'm not alone dealing with Shiba issues! Great blog! I recently had my vet trim Gracie's nails, and he didn't really cut as far down as the groomer does - but I'm just happy that I don't have to deal with an unhappy Shiba myself. We, also, just had a fur issue that's food related. I was feeding her Newman's Organic Chicken kibble, and she broke out with three patches of missing fur (I feel horrible because of the itching!). I switched to the Wellness brand from Petco, and it seems to be working well. Thank you for keeping all of us informed, and entertained! You have very adorable pets!
We're feeding our Shiba California Natural Herring and Sweet Potato for allergies. So far so good on reducing the scratching. They also make an inflatable e-collar now that you can purchase at Petco which is much nicer then the big lampshade kind. He's figured out how to wiggle and kinda chew the very tip of his tail, but the bald patches on his ears and thighs are much better now that he can't get to them. Use the large size, it looks huge but the medium was too small for Jack who's 10 months old.
I absolutely love your blogs! I also have one male and one female Shiba Inu and they are an amazing breed! We have had trouble cutting the male's nails and will probably go to the vet to take care of it also! Thank you for the tips!
wanted to let you know that blue buffalo and nature's recipe are two of the BEST dog foods out there. i have their bigger cousins, aka - 2 akitas, and they also have very sensitive skin and the need for higher quality dog foods. dogs also cannot have turkey at all! the stuff in turkey that makes us humans sleepy, dogs cannot digest and can be deadly if fed on a regular basis. also, no chocolate.... petco offers nail trimming (if you have one near you with a dog salon on site) and it's only 10 bucks. they use a dremmel tool to sand down the nails and this is way better than clipping which can leave sharp edges as opposed to the sanding method which results in smooth rounder nails. i ended up buying the pedipaws sander/dremmel tool to use at home after my akita got used to it at petco and now do it myself! good luck. ps, your shibas are beautiful. will try to post my akitas - one is just a 3 month pup ;) the other is 14 months

Thanks for your comments! We're currently on California Natural, which isn't a bad food choice. But we'll give your suggestions some consideration. As for the nails, Loki gets aggressive and has to be muzzled when his nails are done. Groomer's typically refuse to deal with aggressive behavior. Hence, we go to the vet.
