We're now going for ... not our first... not our second... but our third leash replacement! I have to say, I've been extremely happy with the lifetime guarantee offered by Lupine. It's so easy! I just ship them the old leash with a note telling them my address, and then they very promptly send me a replacement. I pay less than $2 to ship the old chewed up leash back to them. I highly recommend Lupine! (I feel obligated to give them some free advertising, since this is our third replacement.) You can also buy Lupine products through the Midwest Shiba Inu Rescue shop.
"Why so much chewing?" you might ask.
Well, Jujube isn't much of a puller. She might give you a couple tugs to indicate where she wants to go, but she won't really pull much. Instead, she'll start chewing on the leash. So if you're not paying attention to her, and not headed in the direction she wants to go in, then she'll be secretly and patiently working her way to freedom. She also has the bad habit of immediately chewing on her leash as soon as it is put on her. What can I say? The girl likes her freedom.

A dog breeder I used to know commented once that chewing and licking seem to run in bloodlines. Some bloodlines chew, some lick. I haven't verified that myself but Tinky-Winky licks tons and never chews. Her trick for getting off the leash is to plant her feet and let you give the leash a good tug forward... with her big shiba neck and small head, the collar slips right over her head and she's gone. Took me a while to get wise to that. :)

Well, if that's the case with chewing and licking, then Jujube's got BOTH in her bloodline. She loves to lick as well as chew!
Many shibas are able to slip out of their collars. This is why we use a martingale collar.
I'm a fan of Lupine for that reason, too!
p.s. all the shibas we've lived with/fostered have licked and chewed. I just think they get bored/frustrated easily.
hehe.. Juju definitely displays the sneaky escape artist side of shibas. =P I try, but mommy got smart and buys the braided round leashes now. They look bulky, but I'm still trying to work my way through the first one. It's actually wearing faster from regular use than me chewing. That means I need to chew more..

i've taken to spray bitter apple on the part of the leash that looks ripe for the chewing

Yeah, that would be a good solution! I think part of my problem is the fact that Lupine has a lifetime guarantee. Since I know I can get a replacement cheaply, I don't bother trying to train her otherwise. It's also generally true that I spent a lot more effort training Loki than with Jujube.
