Loki & Jujube do fairly well on car rides. Loki has always been good in the car. Jujube tends to be more anxious. She used to be really anxious when we first got her. But she has since calmed down.
Here's Loki. He doesn't look too happy, but he settles down pretty quickly.
Here's Jujube. She takes a few minutes before she settles down.

Do you secure them to anything? Normally I don't (I know! The horror!) but I did have two fosters that were awfully anxious in the car. One calmed down when put in a seatbelt-ready harness, and strapped in. The other did well riding in a crate, with bed, for the trip.
Good question!
Once upon a time long long ago, I did. I used to use a harness for Loki and buckle him down. But he hated it, and I had to constantly train him. Everyday we had to practice. If I got lazy and didn't do harness practice sessions for awhile, he would regress and we'd have to start all over again. I couldn't just use it when needed to. I had to practice all the time. In the end, I gave up.
I suppose I could strap Jujube down. She wouldn't mind. But then I wonder if it's okay to strap one down, and not the other.

Holy sheep-crap, is your car ever clean.
Haha! No, the car is never clean. Sometimes I'm embarrassed when I have to transport humans. But the embarrassment isn't great enough to make me vacuum the car.
Sukoshi rides in a crate in the back seat, on the "passenger" side. I started this when she was a puppy, so she knows that the crate is where she belongs. The crate is bungee corded between the front and rear headrests (cords go thru the crate handle) in order to reduce bounce and movement during sudden stops. (I have been rear ended, so I believe in having dogs secured in some way in a car.) I have had to drive w/o the crate once or twice (I had loaned it out) and Sukoshi settled into the back seat happily, lying there stretched out--and she stayed put.
BTW, where does Sukoshi live? And does he have a web site or is he a Meetup member? He sounds familiar.

I used to have my dogs loose in the car, until I was in a car accident, and both dogs were thrown violently around the car. My cocker spaniel still has back issues from hitting the back of the seat. My little guy (dachshund) fortunately, seems to be all healed up, but to this day he has car anxiety.
They now ride in crates anytime we are in the car, even just for short hops.
They were very lucky they weren't severely injured or killed. It always worries me to see unsecured dogs in a car.
