Allergies
In the past couple of weeks, when we've pet Jujube, we've noticed some bumps. And when we try to dig through her incredibly thick coat, we come up with little tiny black bumps. They looked like dried blood, in other words, scabs.
At first we wondered if Loki and Juju have been getting into fights while we were away at work, and so she had scabs from that. But the bumps were all over her body in places that didn't make sense for any bite marks. Yun thought that maybe she'd been scratching herself so hard to break skin. But why would she do that?
To help solve the mystery, we took her to the vet this past weekend. It turns out that she has allergies, and she must have been scratching hard enough to break skin. The vet explained that when humans have allergies it often manifests as sneezing and watery eyes, but for dogs, it almost always manifests itself on the skin. We don't know what she has allergies from. The vet said it could be seasonal or it could be food. We don't know what it is, but we did have her on California Natural chicken. Prior to that we went through a bag of fish and a bag of lamb. Yun says this was the first time that she was on chicken with us. I frankly don't remember. So now we got a bag of fish just for her. Loki's fine on the chicken, so we're keeping him on that. The vet also gave us some medication for her. This is our first experience in dealing with dog allergies. I hope that it's the chicken and not something else. We'll see what happens in a few weeks. Hopefully, she'll get better.

Hope Jujube is doing better on the food! Evil chicken!
Both our Shiba's have allergies. We've been to the vet on numerous occasions to have them tested, to get medicine, bath wash, etc. We've switched foods, laundry soap (for their blankets/beds)....Apparently they have seasonal allergies and require over the counter Benedryl.
Mika is allergic to chicken, he gets the itchies when he eats it. He also has seasonal allergies so we keep the OTC Benedryl handy. It also works out when we get allergies too.
Hi there....I would like to email with you more about your shiba inu....our shiba Rocky has started to have skin problems and the vet says it's either ringworm or allergies at this point. Hopefully nothing more. I can be reached at smcollins79@gmail.com. I hope to hear from you!

My shiba had the same thing too. It got so bad that he had patches of bald areas near the lower part of his body. It took 6-8 months for it to heal. Turns out he had horrible flea allergies and allergic to certain trees and grass. We took him to the vet and the vet sorta went through their checklist of treatments cause they didn't know what was wrong. So we did a food trail, skin tests, and allergy test. Throughout everything though he was on antibotics and different kinds of shampoo to treat his skin. Turns out the shampoo was a double edge sword. SHiba DON'T NEED to bathe but ONCE OR TWICE a year. They keep pretty clean and if you wash them they loose their nature skin protection and makes them more vulnerable to allergies. So after he got better he's on two kinds of flea med. Topical and injestable alternating twice a month so every two weeks he gets dose even though each one is to be taken once a month. Mine is on a venison and potato diet too. But i don't think he has food allergies but he likes it. Hope this helps!
Oh and if you're wondering how I know about the skin barriar thing. It's because recently I gave him his first annual bath since getting better and he started to itch and scratch again and started to loose patches of hair again but i up the flea meds to once a week for a month just incase and used Dermal soothe anti-itch spray on the spots. It really helps and you can get it from your vet.
