Our first dog-baby incident

Tonight, we unfortunately had our first dog-baby incident. Baby was napping in our bed. I was in the bathroom washing my face. Then all of a sudden I heard the dogs barge into the room. They were playing with each other and doing their Shiba 500. Before I could do anything, Juju jumped on the bed and trampled all over Baby, who immediately started wailing. I was so mad at Juju! I was yelling at her as I picked up Baby and tried to comfort him. I didn't even want to feed her dinner I was so mad. Yun had to feed the dogs dinner.

It's exactly for this reason that I didn't want to co-sleep with Baby. He is always put in his crib to sleep for the night, but from time to time, we sometimes put him on our bed for naps. I guess we just let our guard down with the dogs. We're lucky that Juju is only a 20 pound dog. As worried as I was, it doesn't seem like there was much damage. He cried only for a few minutes and then calmed down. His skin was a little red in the places that she trampled on, but other than that, he was fine. In fact, after about half an hour or so, there was no more redness at all.

I know that she didn't mean any harm. She was just playing. But I'm still angry that she would just trample over Baby. She just doesn't care that there is a person in her way. I guess we learned our lesson. From now on, if he's in our bed, then the bedroom door must be closed. Otherwise, he goes in his crib.

Have you thought about baby-wearing?

I imagine that she bumps into you too? My dogs certainly do in heavy play mode. And we let it go.

I bet it was scary, but a dog doesn't know what it doesn't know.
Neither do cats - my BFF's cats have jumped on her baby tonsof times - and each time she's just as mad!
So she has to separate the cats from her baby when the baby isn't in her crib (though, that doesn't really stop a cat!)

@Mongoose -- Yes, we do baby-wearing, but I don't see how that's relevant? Baby doesn't nap while being worn.

@Jen -- Yeah, she will trample over us too if we are in her way when she does her Shiba 500. And I guess I'm glad that we don't have cats.

I asked about the play thing b/c i'm sure she isn't sensing the fragility of Baby. Unfortunately. I can see my shibas doing the exact same thing and not thinking twice about it.

I'm glad we don't have cats too :)

by the way, thank you so much for continuing the blog about the mix of babies and the inus. I really think it will be helpful for so many people. Me included, maybe eventually.

EEK! That's gotta' be scary! I would be so upset too... my Shiba doesn't pay attention to anything when she's doing her Shiba 500. She's even turned her head and smacked right into the side of the couch before and kept on going.

I'm glad Baby is alright though!

Oh. Most of my friends' babies do fall asleep while being worn. Then you don't have to put them down anywhere.

well, as much as i love my "kids", if they ever trampled on my child, i would be really mad too so i see where you're coming from.

i agree with jen that the dogs don't know what it doesn't know. they're not aware of the fact that they're hurting the baby. it wasn't really intentional.

good thing the dogs have yun cause they'd be really hungry. :)

I'm sorry to hear what happened to the baby. I can imaging how upsetting it must have been for you.

But don't you think it was your fault and not jujubi's? Jujubi is a dog. She'd do what she is trained to do or not trained to do.

From your blog, I understand she's allowed to sleep/jump on your bed all the time right? She's a dog. She doesn't think, "I'm allowed to jump on the bed, but wait a minute, there is a baby there today, so I shouldn't jump".

Important thing is for you not to create a situation where your dogs can accidentally collide with the baby. Perhaps the baby should stay in the crib when unattended or the door closed when on the bed.

good luck!

so...

I wrote this as a response to your comment about Rudy & my shibas.

My three were very conscientious of Rudy and his limitations. They were careful around him and didn't seem to mind his bumping into them, etc.

Until they started to play amongst themselves (my 3)...

"Vi - you'll understand this. They started to play (my 3) and be all hectic, doing shiba 500's and I was PETRIFIED they would slam right into Rudy without even noticing. They almost did a few times but bumped into me, hard, instead so I put him back behind the xpen!"

Play = don't think about anything!

@ Anon -- Yes, I know that it wasn't really Juju's fault. I know that she is just a dog. But gee, thanks for making me feel like I'm a terrible dog owner and mom.

Vi....

I'm sorry if I made you feel "terrible dog owner and mom".

No, I don't think so at all. From what I see in your blog, I think you have a fantastic nice family combination of baby and the dogs.

I'm sorry if I hurt your feeling. Not intending to. When it comes to canine vs. human, humans always win. There are plenty of people out there who'd blame their dogs for the owners faults and I always feel somewhat want to speak for the underdogs and unspoken (literally in this case).

That's all. I don't think you're one of the neglectful dog owners at all. In fact I think you're pretty good.

Keep up good work! :) (sorry for the misunderstanding)

p.s. what's up with the double posting?
