Big difference huh? The colors are much richer with the flash. I think I might have increased the ISO to 200 for the ones without the flash. I always thought natural light was best, and so it's better to adjust things like ISO rather than use flash. Maybe I was wrong.

It's just because you're indoors. Nothing look good indoors. Take pictures of him outside and he'll look great.

were you using a point/shoot or a dslr? the differences in color/contrast may have to do with the white balance settings that are automatically changed (with point/shoots) when you pop open the flash.
It's a hybrid sort of camera. I use a Canon PowerShot S3 IS. It has more functionality than your basic point and shoot, but it's also not a true DSLR.
I think the white balance was just set on auto, so you may be right. I don't know.
