Happy New Year!
I think its cute when the dogs use the crates on their own. It's like they know where they are supposed to go even when no one tells them. And this doesn't happen too often. Just sometimes. Most times we find the dogs in our bed or on the couch.
Happy Holidays!
Juju wishes you a Merry Christmas!
And Loki does too!
Both of them together? Well, they didn't feel like posing together. This was the best that we got.

Happy Valentine's Day & Lunar New Year
Looking all cozy on this lazy Sunday morning. Loki must be feeling particularly loving today, he let Jujube on the bed today.
Taken from my phone.

Playing in the snow
As if two feet of snow wasn't enough, we got even more on Wednesday morning. Well, at least the dogs loved it.
When the two of my pups play, there is a lot of noise, a lot of teeth, and a lot of speed. It can look scary to people who haven't seen such rough play, but it's all fun and games to them.
Loki looking up. He's got a little bit of snow on his nose.
Loki loves digging. He digs in dirt. He digs in sand at the beach. He digs in our bed.
And here, he digs in the snow.

Doesn't Loki look so mean in this last shot?
A tale of two tails
Our two shibas have very different tails.
Loki has a very loose curl. His tail curls and uncurls easily and all the time. You can tell when he's fearful or apprehensive when his tail uncurls. His tail seems to have a personality all on its own.
Jujube, on the other hand, has a very tightly curled tail. It's more like a little bundled knob. Perhaps she never gets fearful or apprehensive -- she is pretty fearless. The only time I see it uncurled is when she is fully relaxed when sitting or lying down, and even then, it doesn't happen often.

Jujube vs. The Snow
When we got Jujube from the breeder, the breeder asked me, "Does it snow where you are? She loves the snow." The breeder wasn't kidding! Jujube loves the snow. She absolutely adores it.
Here's Jujube making her way through our backyard. Why she ventured out there? I don't know. She's happy to pee and poop in the foreground area, the area under the deck where there is little snow accumulation; so she's not going out there for that purpose. Maybe she's thinking that if the snow keeps up, then she'll be able to make her escape and jump over the fence.
We have about two feet of snow now and it's still snowing. The snow is taller than she is! But that doesn't deter her from trekking through it. Shiba Inus are Japanese mountain dogs. I guess this is what they do best.
Jujube conquers the snow.

So sweet
One of the best things that I love about Juju is that she accompanies me around the house when I'm suffering from insomnia in the middle of the night. The neighborhood is quiet. The house is quiet. My husband's asleep in bed. Loki is asleep in the crate.
And Jujube gets up out of bed to be my companion. If I go get something to eat or drink, she's with me in the kitchen. If I go to my laptop, she's resting in the nearest corner. If I go read a book, she's right there with me once again.
I suppose that many dogs display this sort of clingy behavior, but shibas tend to be more independent. Loki certainly doesn't bother to follow us around like a shadow. Normally, both Yun and I like their independent nature. But then, there are times like these, when I've haven't been able to fall asleep for over an hour, and Jujube's close companionship is very much appreciated.

Jujube, the Overseer
Jujube oversees the driveway snow shoveling effort and makes sure that it is up to her high standards.

Video of the pups enjoying the first snowfall of the season. Loki is the one who keeps on digging and offering play bows. It's so much fun to watch them enjoy themselves!
A real fox
Go get your toy!
When Loki is feeling playful, he'll respond to the command, "Go get your toy! Where's your toy?" And he'll go fetch the nearest toy. "Toy" is non-specific. It doesn't matter what toy he brings; it's usually whatever is closest. He brings us a toy and then we play with it.
Last night, the whole family was lounging in the bedroom. Jujube was chewing on a toy. When Yun asked Loki to "Go get your toy!", Loki was at a loss. There were no other toys around. Jujube was chewing on the toy at hand. Oh no, what was Loki to do?
He looked around helplessly, and then the wheels in his head started spinning. Ah ha! He went over to his crate and pulled his entire blanket out, and started playing with it. He hasn't played with his blanket in ages. It was so very cute and reminded me of his puppy days.

Going to the vet
We went to the vet today. Fun times. Fun times.
Here's Loki in the waiting room. What a good boy! Nice and calm.

Here we are in the exam room. His tail was down and he was shaking practically the whole time. I put some treats down for him.

At first, he was too afraid to even eat the treats, but finally he succumbed and chowed down.
In the end, the vet had to use a muzzle and we had a vet tech help hold him too. We got his nails done, got some shots, and a general check up. No screaming, but lots of shaking. When the vet tech put Loki back down and took the muzzle off, Loki put on the biggest smile ever. He was super cute and so happy to be done.
