Staring

I don't know if all dogs do this, but Loki will stare very intently at me.

If he stares at me at close range, it means he wants to either play or go outside. Usually, I take him outside just in case he does have to pee, because I think it's useful for a dog to be able to communicate the fact that it needs to go pee. But I've definitely noticed that Loki's testing me to see if he can get me to just take him outside for fun rather than for a pee. Sometimes he gets away with having his regular walks earlier than usual; sometimes I say, but I just took you out! No play!

But what does it mean if he's staring at me from a distance? He'll be sitting by the sliding door to the balcony, while I'm at my computer. From time to time, I glance over at him and there he is staring intently at me. It's a little bit unsettling to know that he hasn't been looking outside at the world at all, he's been just staring at me for who knows how long!

Maybe he's looking at you as his alpha leader, trying to read your que so he knows the state of things. I read somewhere that human's aren't supposed to look dogs intently in the eyes unless giving praise or a command. If you find yourself in a staring contest Loki should break eye contact first, if he doesn't it means that he thinks he's your leader! I don't know if this is true...but something to try out with him next time you catch him staring. What a silly shiba!

I catch my shibas staring at me, too. I have no idea what it means. It does sort of have the feel of adoration and/or longing (like, I'm doing something else, but they wish I was paying attention to them), but maybe I'm just reading into it too much. I know when I stare at them, it's because I think they're cute, so maybe they think I'm cute, too. :P

Vi-

I saw the cutest shiba in the park this morning. He looked JUST LIKE Loki! His owner said he's a little over a year old and a complete lunatic (eats the walls, etc.). He was so sweet and friendly, though. Just had to share!
