Dogs in bed

Do your dogs sleep in your bed?

Ours do, but at different times. Loki crawls into bed when no one is around. He's sneaky like that. He almost never sleeps in bed with us. Juju, on the other hand, only sleeps in our bed when we are in it. She tends to be this big lump at the foot of our bed and prevents us from being able to stretch our legs out. She doesn't move when we nudge her. To get her out of bed, you have to push her, pick her up, or promise her treats elsewhere.

Both sets of our parents think we're crazy for allowing dogs in our bed. But we don't mind. The more the merrier!

It's part of our pack - especially in the winter, I love the Inu cuddles.

Kitsune won't sleep on the bed if anyone is even near it. He's the bed sneaker. He sneaks into bed when no one else is around, and slinks out of it if anyone comes into the room. I'm not sure why. If I try to get him to lay down with me while I read, he'll lay there looking decidedly uncomfortable about the situation for a minute, and finally jump up and run away. It's like I've forced him to do something terrible. He has no problem laying NEXT to the bed when someone is in it. Same with the couch. He'll sleep on it when no one else is on it. If someone else is on it, he looks very uncomfortable and finally leaves. He's weird that way.

Zuko shares his king size bed with us. We get a small section of the bed, he gets the middle with his feet and tail stretched out to the max. If we get up in the middle of the night, he will transport to our spot and curl up against our pillow and fall asleep immediately. Moving him after that is challenging, to say the least.

@K9Trainer -- Wow! So, Loki's not the only bed sneaker? Good to know that he's in good company.

We have our master bedroom and a guest room. Our Shiba will jump in the master bed and play with us, but refuses to sleep on it and preferes to sleep under it. However, if for some reason we lay down and fall asleep in the guest room, she will climb in bed there and actually sleep.

I don't get it.

I was talking to a friend about letting dogs sleep in the bed.

I think its quite a nice thing and just wondered, with those Shibas who tend to sleep in or on the bed, did they do so from an early age and get used to it?

Im going to be crate training my pup but I'd love to let him sleep on my bed as its probably the warmest and comfortable room in the house.

Akira loves to sneak in the bed after my BF wakes up. He curls up in a ball and sleeps beside me ... I love it, we get to cuddle a bit before we wake up :)

My Shiba loves to sleep in bed with me and my wife. Sometime, when we try to move her, IMPOSSIBLE! She's OUT! Sometime, I have to shake her hard to wake her up!

She's our heat during the nights when we set our temp low. :-)

Shiba inus are awesome!

@Chung-Nguyen Le -- When Loki was a puppy, we crated him at night until he was completely potty trained, which was about 5.5 months old. At that point, we let him on the bed. So, I suggest that you wait until your puppy is completely potty trained.

@Jeremy -- Yes! Dogs are wonderful heaters!

We crate trained Cody from the beginning. He would come to bed with me, but when my fiance came to bed, he would move him to the crate. We recently started letting him stay out of the crate at night. Now he'll fall asleep with us, get up in the middle of the night (probably from me rolling over him trying to get comfortable- he takes up a lot of space for a 21 lb dog), sleep in his crate for the night, then come back and snuggle in the morning. It's perfect!

Suki is allowed on the bed with us, and boy does she take advantage of it. She likes to lay right on TOP of our legs for some reason. Either that or right next to my head. If I get up to do anything in the middle of the night, I'll come back to bed only to find her stretched out right over my spot! I just nudge her over hehe. Funny thing is, she'll always sleep when we decide to sleep. So if I take a nap during the day, she'll stop whatever she's doing and snuggle up beside me. I love that about her actually =)

I see nothing wrong with letting your dogs sleep on the bed as long as they remember whose bed it is.

There are a couple reasons why I don't let my dogs sleep with me. The first being my bedroom is part of the cats domain, that is where their food bowls are.

Second being I have one special cat who I adopted at a very young age and ever since she has been able to jump onto my pedestal waterbed, she has slept with me almost every day. I push the two pillows together and she lays her head on the other pillow facing me and snuggles so close that her long whiskers sometimes tickle my face. Her hind feet are ofter pushing against my stomach. I lay one arm across her and pet her and she purrs so softly and it is very soothing to me and takes me no time at all to fall asleep. She will often reach one of her front paws out and gently touch me on the face I guess to make sure I'm still there. Sometimes she will only stay there about 10 minutes, but other times I will wake up several hours later and she is still there. I call her my little stress reliever. LOL

The last reason being that Sami would probably not be able to stop licking me and I would never get any sleep! LOL

Snick has slept on the bed with me since he was old enough to sleep through the night without being crated. He used to sleep by my feet but now he snuggles up next to head or chest. I can't sleep without him!

For the most part, he doesn't get in the bed without me, except sometimes to say "hey! you know it's past bedtime right?" (http://twitpic.com/8xto9)

Every so often, I'll find he's been in my bed during the day and VERY rarely I'll find a TOY IN MY BED. One day he actually buried a toy under my pillow, which still makes me laugh. (http://twitpic.com/683bn) It's kinda icky when you think about it, but it was so funny that I don't really care. LOL
